The Pashtun, or Pushtun, are a race of warriors who live primarily in Afghanistan and Pakistan. They are one of the largest unreached people groups in the world, made up of about sixty tribes, each with its own territory. Their legends say they are descendants of Afghana, grandson of King Saul.

They are known for elegance, hospitality, fierce loyalty, and a deep love of honour. At the core of Pashtun society is the extended family. Their unique turbans are tied in ways that indicate tribal identity — tribes range from highly educated city dwellers to tent-dwelling nomads.

Many Pashtun are extremely poor, and since their entire way of life is opposed to change, they present one of the strongest challenges to the Christian Church today.

How to Pray for the Pashtun

Ask God to raise up prayer teams that will break up the soil through persistent intercession for the Pashtun.

Ask God to grant wisdom and favour to mission agencies focusing on the Pashtun people.

Pray for Pashtun children who grow up in fear and hatred of outsiders — that they would encounter the love of Christ.

Ask God to encourage and protect the small number of Pashtun believers.

Pray that God will provide greater peace and freedom for workers to live and serve among the Pashtun.
